Starlink satellite internet dishes are being installed at Tesla Superchargers

The initiative is claimed to be an attempt to provide owners with satellite-based internet while charging their electric vehicles.

If you want to watch a show at a Tesla Supercharger but don’t want to pay for Premium Connectivity, don’t worry – there may be an official option. Tesla EV owners have observed Starlink satellite internet dishes at Supercharger stations, according to Electrek. It’s unclear how many there are or whether they’re available to drivers, but Florida is included in the deployment.

Tesla hasn’t commented on the launch, and its public relations team is said to have been dismantled.

At Superchargers, Starlink broadband can be used in a variety of ways. It could, at the very least, replace or supplement existing connections that handle fundamental functions such as payments and charging status. This may let the firm to deploy Superchargers more quickly and in more remote locations. This is critical as the business aims to treble the size of its charging station network while also allowing non-Tesla EVs to charge.

However, processing transactions doesn’t require that much bandwidth (the median US Starlink connection is roughly 97Mbps), and it wouldn’t be shocking if Tesla employed the satellite link to give WiFi to Supercharger users. You’re usually parked at a charger for long enough to view some TV programmes – you could watch shows without paying for Premium Connectivity or using your phone as a hotspot. If the chargers are busy, network congestion may be an issue, but it would be convenient and could sell customers on Starlink service at home.

According to Electrek, a user on Reddit saw a Starlink dish, officially named Dishy McFlatface, at a Supercharger station in Lake City, Florida.

Those charging their automobiles will be able to connect to the internet via the Starlink Dish. Standard Connectivity allows drivers to access in-car entertainment while charging.
